You'll Never Go Wrong With Trying Out Soap Making As A New Hobby

by Jen Hopkins

Have you ever wondered how soap is made? All of our lives, soap has always been a part of our daily needs. That bar of soap that we use for washing has proved its worth to us. Wouldn't it be an interesting venture to learn soap making? It is quite a simple hobby that requires a lot of creativity. Once you learn the basics, you will instantly get hooked.

Soap is basically a salt of a fatty acid. In laymen's terms, fats and oils are combined with alkali in order to produce these soaps. This process is called saponification. You might be surprised to discover that all of the soaps that you see are made under this principle. This is how amazing soap making is. With just one step, you will be able to make a lot of soap varieties.

Do you want to know the basics of making soap? It is quite simple. Water and lye are mixed initially to stabilize it. This reaction releases heat which may increase the temperature of the mixture. Once the temperature has lowered, additives may be incorporated. This mixture is ready to be placed in the mold and cured.

It is all about accuracy when you start with soap making. It is very important to ensure that the ingredients are measured exactly. You have to be sure that the ingredient react completely when making soaps. If there are any excess, this may cause the soaps to be harmful.

The right process of soap making is very important. You need to make sure that you choose a certain process of soap making that is very comfortable for you. It will only give you a hard time making soaps if you are uncomfortable. Possible methods are the melt and pour, cold process, hot process and transparent soap process.

The basicity of soaps is an important factor. Especially since we use these on our bodies, we have to control the pH of soaps. If the soaps are too basic, it may cause irritations on the skin. By dropping phenolphthalein on the soap mixture you will be able to see how basic the soap is. The color must only be faint pink when phelophthalein is added. This will indicate the pH is around 7 to 9.

Additives are as important as your other ingredients. These serve the main purpose of actually giving certain properties to the soap. Especially essential soaps, these give fragrance with the soap. The good thing is that additives can be added subjectively. It is up to you how much additives you want to add.

Soap making is indeed an interesting activity. Instead of using the usual soaps that you buy, you can choose to make your own. Since you decide what you put in your soaps, it will be a more enjoyable activity. Once you start with creating your own soaps, you will surely get hooked in soap making.
