Try Soap Making to Bring Out the Inner artist in You

by Jen Hopkins

If you don't have a hobby to do on your free time, then one hobby that you can try taking up that will surely take up a lot of your time is soap making. This hobby can be done by anyone of all ages since it is very easy to do. What makes this a fun hobby is by thinking of creative ways of how to design your soap.

You will first need to learn how to make the basic type of soap and practice your technique so that you will have an easy time in making and giving your soap the properties that you want before designing them. Once you are adept at making your soap, you may then move on to making more advanced soaps.

Soap making only requires a few ingredients and you will be on your way into making your soap. The two main ingredients that you will need are oil and lye. In addition to these, you may also use some herbal extracts, coloring dyes, fragrant oils and other ingredients that you can think of to improve your soap.

Using molds to give shape and design to your soap is the first step in making creative designs. But you should not rely entirely on molds as you will not be able to make great designs with this. You can use knives and other tools to sculpt your soap in any way you like.

You may also want to do some more advanced techniques when preparing your soap mixture. To have a tie-dye effect on your soap, you may have to stir your soap mixture slowly while pouring in your coloring dye so as the pattern of the dye will remain even after the soap has hardened. You may try different ways of doing this to make beautiful patterns on your soap.

You can also combine different soaps to make even more beautiful soaps. When your soap is already semi-solid, you may combine them with different soaps similar to how you combined clay sculptures when you were younger. This way, you can mix soaps of different colors and shapes to make a bigger soap with a very good design.

The good thing about this hobby is that your final product will not go to waste. Soaps that may not be done correctly can still be used in the bathroom when you are showering or taking a bath. As for soaps with excellent designs, you may display them on your bathroom, give them out as gifts or even sell them if people really liked your designs.

Try soap making today and get those creative juices flowing. You will definitely enjoy making your own soaps especially if you enjoyed making things with your hands when you were younger. The best thing about this is that your creations will not go to waste even if you made some mistakes and produced some not-so-good designs with your soap. These can still be used in the bathroom so this is really a very practical and useful hobby to have.
