The concept behind soap making revolves around saponification. Saponification is simply the process of making soap from fats, oils and alkali. Soaps are practically salts of fatty acids which are effective in cleaning the body. As soaps are used on the skin, the salts trap the dirt. As the soap is washed off from the body, dirt is also washed off.
Ingredients for soap making are easy to buy. These are commonly available in the local grocery. All that you need are sodium hydroxide and oil. Once these are mixed, soap begins to form. The melt and pour method is the easiest since there is already a mixed soap base that you just have to melt.
Homemade soaps are very gentle on the skin. Since these are made from scratch, you know the ingredients that you put in your soap. Depending on what you want to have, you can alter the formulation of the soap. Just make sure to apply superfatting or the addition of excess fats to make the soap skin-friendly.
Make sure to take necessary precautions to soap making. Lye is very harmful to the body. Always make sure that you wear protective clothing to prevent lye from burning the skin. Never pour water into lye instead do it the other way around. Choose an area in your home for soap making that is well ventilated since fumes can be harmful.
